Tips to Avoid Litter Box Problems with Your Cat-Aug-2020

Getting started with a litter box can be a long trial and error process. As a cat owner, you want to have as much litter box success as possible. Here are some tips for litter box success:

  1. Choose the right box. Take into account the size of your cat, age and privacy preference while choosing a box. Some cats do not like having a hooded box and prefer to be out in the open. Research the best box for your cat’s personality before buying.
  2. Choose the right litter. There are many different types of litter. Consider whether you want clumping or non-clumping. You also want to consider scented or unscented. Scented may help hide odors but it may cause some sensitivity or your cat may not like the odor.
  3. Find the best location for the litter box. Find a private area away from heavy traffic, such as a mud room or spare bathroom. If you have multiple cats, choose a couple spots throughout the house to appease each cat. Having litter boxes on each level of the house is preferred in case your cat needs to hurry over to the box.
  4. Keep the litter box clean. You should be scooping the litter box every 1-2 days depending on the amount of cats you have. Make sure the litter box and area around the box are clean.
  5. Keep odors at bay. Along with a daily scoop of the litter box, there are a few ways you can keep the litter box clean. Do a complete litter change once a month. While you are switching out the litter, completely clean out the entire box with soap and water. Add a box of baking soda near the box (but somewhere your cat will not knock it over) to help keep odors away.
